Een brandwond ontstaat doordat de huid in contact komt met bijvoorbeeld hete vloeistoffen (denk aan koffie en thee), hete gassen, vuur, chemische stoffen, straling of elektriciteit. Ook het sap van de plant Berenklauw kan voor brandwonden zorgen.
Deze kun je zelf behandelen. De huid is dan rood, licht gezwollen en pijnlijk. Je ziet geen blaren of ontvellingen, maar een kleine oppervlakkige brandwond.
Een tweede en/of derdegraadsbrandwond, brandwonden door elektriciteit en/of chemische stoffen of een brandwond groter dan een euromuntstuk? Raadpleeg dan altijd een (huis)arts of bel 112.
Verwijder kleding om goed te kunnen koelen en om te zien waar de brandwond zich bevindt.
