One-way catheterisation is done when a person is unable to fully urinate on their own. This may be necessary after surgery, for a bladder infection, or if there is a blockage in the urinary tract.
Intermittent catheterisation is the regular emptying of the bladder with a one-time catheter. This can be done by the person themselves or with the help of a healthcare provider. It helps to empty the bladder completely and prevents complications such as cystitis.
A catheter is inserted through the urethra. First, the area around the urethra is cleaned. Then the catheter, often with the help of a lubricant, is carefully inserted until it reaches the bladder and urine begins to flow.
Inserting a catheter can feel uncomfortable, especially the first few times. Some people experience mild pain, but this usually diminishes as one becomes more accustomed to the procedure. If the pain persists, it is important to discuss it with a doctor
Hekura Enlight Alpha has a flexible, spherical tip and a ready-to-use, hydrophilic coating. This makes the catheter comfortable and easy to insert and remove.
The catheterisation itself usually takes only a few minutes. Preparation, such as washing hands and cleaning the area around the urethra, may take a little longer.
Intermittent catheterisation is often recommended as the first choice because it poses less risk of infection and better preserves bladder function. An indwelling catheter, which stays in the bladder continuously, may be needed when intermittent catheterisation is not possible. For example, when there are mobility problems.
